Financing a Maumee Valley education

EdChoice: What you need to know

EdChoice scholarships are now available for all Ohio students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. There are two types:

Traditional

Awarded to any student from a designated public school.
No income verification is required.

Expansion

Awarded to any K-12 student residing in the state of Ohio.
Income verification is required.
Here is a step-by-step guide to the state’s income verification process.

The Process

If an applicant to Maumee Valley is accepted to enroll, the family can then submit to Maumee Valley a completed EdChoice Scholarship Program Request Form, the child’s birth certificate, and proof of current address (current month utility bill or monthly mortgage statement less than 60 days old). Maumee Valley submits the EdChoice Scholarship application on the family’s behalf.
Once the EdChoice Scholarship application is approved, the accepted Maumee Valley applicant will be issued an enrollment contract reflecting the scholarship amount along with any additional scholarship or Flexible Tuition.
Depending upon grade and income, EdChoice families can receive an award ranging from $850 to $8,407 per child enrolled in school.

Spend a day as a Maumee Valley student during this special experience. The next dates are Nov. 5, 2024, and March 10, 2025. Check back for registration information.

These events are for students now in Kindergarten through 10th grade and who next year will enter 1st through 11th grade. You will be paired with a current student with similar interests and together will attend classes and assemblies, tour the campus, talk with faculty and other students, and have lunch on us in the Dining Hall. It's the best way to discover the Maumee Valley difference. We are excited to show you around!

Q: What is Flexible Tuition?
A: Flexible Tuition is not a grant or an award but additional funds provided on an annual basis. The family submits income and expenses on the FACTS portal and the MV Flexible Tuition Committee reviews the provided calculations to determine the flexible tuition amount.

Q: How often do I apply for EdChoice?
A: Families apply each year as their circumstances, school budget, and tuition amounts change. If a family's financial situation does not change significantly, they should not expect their flexible tuition amount to change significantly.

What is flexible tuition?

Flexible tuition is an understanding that all families have differing circumstances and abilities to support a Maumee Valley education. Similar programs can be found at most private K-12 schools across the country. Using financial data provided by the family, we can reduce the amount of annual tuition owed based upon those individual circumstances. The amount reduced is not a loan and it never needs to be repaid. Neither is it financial aid; instead, families pay the amount of tuition that makes sense for them financially.
How do I apply for flexible tuition?

Maumee Valley provides a convenient online method for the flexible tuition program through FACTS. The FACTS Tuition Management system expands the payment opportunities for families and simplifies payment tracking and management. Families can visit the FACTS website to start the process of creating an account.
Should every prospective and current family apply for flexible tuition?

We encourage all families to apply. The school’s resources, however, are limited. If you are in doubt, speak with someone in the Business Office.
Do I need to apply every year?

Yes. MV families who want to participate must apply each year. Doing so allows tuition levels to be adjusted as needed based on changes in both the school’s and family’s financial circumstances.
Do all students who are offered admission also receive flexible tuition if their family qualifies?

Maumee Valley’s admission and flexible tuition processes are separate. An admission determination is made before determining flexible tuition. Maumee Valley is not able to offer flexible tuition to every student who qualifies for both admission and a reduced tuition amount.
If our family does not apply for flexible tuition when we first apply for admission, can we apply in future years?

MV families can apply any time during the enrollment cycle.
Are flexible tuition application deadlines important?

Yes, they are extremely important. Meeting deadlines makes it possible to deliver timely decisions that are fair and equitable.
What does flexible tuition cover?

Our families are required to pay some tuition and fees. Flexible tuition amounts are only applied to tuition costs.
Is flexible tuition available for all grades?

Yes. Flexible tuition at Maumee Valley is available to families in all divisions and grades.
If our financial situation only qualifies for a small reduction in tuition, should we still apply?

Yes. Each family's circumstances are different and Maumee Valley works to create the right tuition amount for each family.
How is our family contribution calculated? What factors are considered?

All aspects of financial conditions are considered, including income, assets, debts, and expenses.
Are some Maumee Valley families awarded full tuition?

No. Every family must contribute to the cost of their child's education.
If we participate in the flexible tuition program this year, do we receive the same amount in future years?

Because financial conditions change yearly, Maumee Valley families must reapply each year to the flexible tuition program. Based upon those conditions, the flexible tuition amount may be adjusted. Generally, families may expect to receive similar annual tuition amounts if financial circumstances are unchanged.
Are there accommodations available for significant changes in income?

Families are eligible to apply every year. The Business Office is happy to work with families to develop a temporary payment plan during a time of difficulty.
Are the flexible tuition records kept confidential?

Information submitted by parents is held confidentially by the MV Flexible Tuition Committee. All decisions are considered confidential agreements between the family and Maumee Valley, and each side is expected to respect confidentiality. Our teachers, staff, and non-committee administrators cannot see the information nor do they know which families have applied or are receiving flexible tuition.
Can I share my flexible tuition amount with other families?

We discourage families from comparing awards or making assumptions about what others are receiving and the reasons why. Because of the variability between hundreds of families’ financial situation and yearly changes, such comparisons can be misleading.
What is the typical income level for a family who qualifies for flexible tuition?

The average income of a family in the flexible tuition program is $115,000. But income is not the only factor in determining the flexible tuition amount.
Is there a discount for siblings?

Our flexible tuition program is structured to provide assistance to as many families as possible. Because the assistance is based on financial need, the number of students attending is factored into that equation. But there is no automatic discount for siblings attending from the same family.
How do families with separate households apply for flexible tuition?

Talk to the Business Office and they will guide you through the process.
Are there payment options available for tuition?

Maumee Valley offers multiple payment plan options (one, three, or 12 months). Payments will be deducted automatically from your checking or savings account. For an additional 3 percent convenience fee, you may charge your American Express, MasterCard, Visa, or Discover Card.
When will I hear about an award?

Within two weeks after the admission process is complete and all required information is submitted into FACTS, a decision will be made.
Does Maumee Valley offer scholarships?
Maumee Valley awards merit scholarships to qualified applicants for Grades 6-9. The merit scholarship program is designed to recognize the various qualities we value in a Maumee Valley Country Day School student. There are two types of scholarships students can apply for:
- HAWK SCHOLAR: Recipients are selected based solely on scholastic achievement.
- MV MISSION AWARD: Recipients are selected based on academic record in addition to contributions outside of academics through extracurricular and community engagement. We award up to seven renewable scholarships worth $2,500 each in both categories each year. Interested families should contact the Admission Office for more information and the timeline.
What are some other options to finance my child’s education?

The NW Ohio Scholarship Fund is an outside organization offering privately funded scholarship dollars. More information can be found at Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund.

The Ohio 529 plan is a tax-advantaged investment plan operated by a state to encourage saving for education expenses. Funds from 529 accounts can now be used to pay tuition for students attending private K-12 schools. Contact your financial advisor for more information.

Maumee Valley Merit Scholarships & Endowment-Funded Awards
- Merit Scholarships: Awarded to qualified applicants for grades 6 to 9. Up to seven renewable scholarships worth $2,500 each can be awarded in both categories each year:

  - Endowment: Maumee Valley is fortunate to have multiple named endowment funds. Some of these provide new student scholarships based on specific criteria. (Information and timeline will be shared during the active application process.)
NW OHIO scholarship fund, Ohio 529, SGO

- Maumee Valley is a participant in Ohio's Scholarship Granting Organization program. The program's funding comes directly from Ohio taxpayers, who receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction in their state taxes up to $750 per individual.
