Maumee Valley names Niki McCoy to lead girls’ basketball program

Maumee Valley Country Day School today announced the hiring of Niki McCoy to lead its girls’ basketball program.

“I am excited for the opportunity to build a program that prioritizes player mental health and a winning mindset while setting and holding high expectations,” said McCoy, a highly accomplished high school and collegiate athlete. “I believe Maumee Valley is a perfect place to set a standard of success at the very beginning of this rebuilding process both on and off the court.” She recently became a full-time employee of Maumee Valley in the role of director of residential life.

“We are beyond excited to have Coach McCoy and her staff take over our program,” said Rob Conover, the athletic director at Maumee Valley. “Niki is a builder of people and programs. She understands the current state of our program and is excited for the opportunity to build it back stronger than ever. I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to work with Coach McCoy.”

“The timing is ideal, and I have seen the talent and drive of current athletes and younger players coming up. I can’t wait to start working and developing our teams,” McCoy said. “I am truly looking forward to getting started and showing our players that I am committed to battling alongside them to achieve every goal we set as a program.”

High School Career Highlights:
McCoy is from Northwest Ohio and graduated from Northview High School in Sylvania. A four-year letter winner, she scored more than 1,000 points playing for Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Jerry Sigler. She helped to lead Northview teams to Northern Lake League Championships and two Division I State Final Four appearances.

She was selected 1st-Team NLL and District and earned All-Ohio Honors in Division I, where she was named Player of the Year. Sbe also was selected as a McDonald’s All-American Nominee. After a 96-4 high school record and back-to-back state tournament appearances, she was inducted into the Sylvania Schools’ Athletics Hall of Fame.

College Career Highlights:
A highly recruited athlete, she chose to play at the University of Akron. She was named to the All-Freshman Team for the Mid-American Conference and was an All-MAC selection her second year during which she averaged 16.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

After two years at Akron, she transferred to Bowling Green State University where she again earned All-MAC Tournament honors, topped the 1,000-point mark in her career, and averaged 13.2 points per game.  

Coaching Highlights:
McCoy has coached at Whitmer High School and Timberstone Junior High and founded Next Play AAU for girls’ basketball players in Northwest Ohio. In a short time, she and her staff have helped build Next Play AAU into 11 teams and a very well-respected program that helps train and prepare girls’ basketball players from across the area. She also has been working at BCSN as an on-air analyst covering high school boys’ and girls’ basketball as well as some local college men’s and women’s basketball.
