An appreciation for music starts as soon as children enter Maumee Valley as they are introduced to a variety of genres through singing, listening, movement, storytelling, and playing instruments. Students build foundational skills and connect music across subjects. PreKindergarten and Junior Kindergarten students explore music twice a year in special courses known as Intensives. Kindergarten begins seven straight years of general music education, accompanied by performances of their growing abilities in such annual productions of “Three Nanny Goats Gruff” and “Stone Soup.”
Course and performance options increase as students move into the Middle School (grades 4-8), where they are able to take choir and strings courses as well as music electives. Their abilities also are put on display in performances, including a capstone strings concert in the spring. Performing arts greatly expand once in the Upper School, where students can perform as pit musicians in stage productions, as part of capstone projects in independent studies, and in chamber and string ensembles. The annual spring concert features both Middle and Upper School vocalists and musicians performing about a dozen pieces for families.
